Altamaha River
The river, with its length and breadth, requires a minimum 1 day trip(5-6hr), but extended canoe or sea kayak expeditions for hundreds of miles are also possible. The Ohoopee River, a beautiful blackwater river with pure white sandbars, combines with the Altamaha to make a wonderful two day trip.

As the Altamaha River enters into the tidal area, many islands and channels make the extended trip an adventure with diversity of wildlife; flora and fauna.   Lewis Creek Natural Area ( Ga. D.N.R.) contain some of the last Ancient Tidal Bald Cypress.     Much of the estuary is owned and managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service for Migratory Waterfowl.    Some of these islands are maintained as wilderness areas with no public access so as to protect endangered shore birds and ocean birds nesting area.

Thanks to the efforts of The Nature Conservancy, there's nearly 100 miles of protected river corridor from the estuary near Darien to the confluence of the Ohoopee River.      Map skills and proper planning are required for the tidal area!
